Allie, our host, was incredibly friendly and helpful and provided excellent information about the area. The furnishings and decor are quirky and fun, especially if you like Victoriana. We really enjoyed having our cup of tea and breakfast on the old-fashioned china while sitting at the charming breakfast table in the sunny bay window.

This venue was chosen because of the proximity to Cathedral Caves. McLean Falls were also worth the look. We knew this would be rustic, but the chalet accommodation was fantastic.
The restaurant was great but closes its doors at 6pm. They also make great coffee.

Everything was perfect. The bed was comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with supplies, including breakfast foods. The location couldn't be better - a five minute walk to the beach and an easy drive to surrounding attractions. It was so quiet and private.

Locations, facilities, room, cleanliness.
Accommodation is right near Sea Lions beach, we’ve seen them every time we headed towards the Surat Bay. They were 10m away, playing, swimming, relaxing. Amazing experience.

Beautiful setting: far reaching views, wonderful privacy, great washer/dryer facilities. A flock of Silvereyes to entertain us just outside the window. Plenty of wood for the wood stove.

One early anoon and night arrival was enough for us to eat lunch at hotel, visit Nugget Point lighthouse, beach walk and relax on deck as sun set but if keen to go out on long hikes another day or 2 would be an advantage. Hotel closed Mondays but food van on beachfront nearby open and cafe a short drive away.

Owaka is a small town with limited facilities (although the Lumberjack Cafe is really first-rate). The surrounding area is the draw. Catlins Lake is right outside of town and, since it is really an estuary, it is a great place to observe shorebirds while surrounded by fields of sheep. The coast itself is characterized by wide beaches punctuated by rocky headlands and coastal forest, and abundant waterfalls. It is a really fine area for a three to five day stay.

Loads of wildlife to watch- we saw bellbirds, fantail, a yellow eyed penguin, sealions all within a few meters of where we were staying. We walked over to Jacks Blow hole following the doc track beside the accommodation. We were down for a School reunion but have previously visited sites such as McLean falls, Purakanui falls, Surat bay, Cannibal bay, Curio Bay, Horseshoe falls. All well worth a look around. This is some of New Zealands presitine rainforest and home to many bird species as well as the world's rarest penguins - Hoiho - Yellow Eyed Penguins.

Great place to visit with many waterfalls in the vicinity and lots to see in the area and close by. Some great history about the place to learn about also.
A visit Slope Point (most southerly point of the South Island) and Nugget Point Lighthouse is a must.
Tip for eating...make sure you stop at Peake' s Kitchen in Papatowai and try either their Home-made Peake's Pies or their Famous Beef Burger (Winner of the "Supreme Burger 2025" title as part of "Burger Nation NZ")...you won't be disappointed!

Kaka Point is a very rocky but beautiful beach. Plenty of seals to see. The Nugget Point lighthouse isn't far away and the walk isn't prohibitive. The cafe ("The Point") is worth it and probably the most desirable choice in the area because you are right on the beach.

Owaka is a small village, it has an excellent Inn especially for accommodation. The village has a small but well stocked supermarket, it has two restaurants and two cafes. It is quiet and peaceful. It is well located for visits to sites along the coast. It has a modern museum that gives you information on the history of Owaka it also had an art exhibition.

Travellers just need to be aware that Niagara Falls is a joke, but it is a lovely place to stay. Possibly, Curio Bay around the corner would be a more spectacular place to stay, but Niagara is only a short driving distance away.
We used Niagara as our base to get to Invercargill, after travelling from Dunedin. We spend a day visiting Mclean falls, unfortunately Cathedral Cave was closed.

Comfortable beds, nice restaurant and bar-although we only bought drinks.
The ladies toilets were not cleaned thoroughly and the lighting was very dull in the kitchen.
McLean falls are definitely worth the walk.
