Spiritual Sanctity in the Umbrian Hills

Assisi is world famous for the 2 saints – Francis and Clare – who were born here and subsequently founded Christian poverty movements. The tomb of the former is in the Basilica of St Francis, majestically located on a hill surveying the Umbrian countryside. Its graceful lines and powerful frescoes defy its 13th-century construction.

The Basilica of St Clare is from the same period and displays remains of the saint who inspired the Poor Clares. Between the 2 basilicas is the New Church, positioned where St Francis supposedly once lived, and the Cathedral of St Rufinus, dedicated to the saint who converted Assisi to Christianity.

Considerably older are the Roman villa remains near main Piazza del Comune, whose historic buildings house shops and pavements cafes on the site of the former forum. The columns of the Church of St Mary over Minerva were the entrance to a Roman temple.

Roman castle remains sit in the hills above Assisi, as does the more intact, medieval Rocca Maggiore which offers magnificent views over the town. Even higher is the Eremo delle Carceri, a stone hermitage where St Francis apparently preached to birds.

Quaint little town surrounded by picturesque landscapes of surrounding cities and vineyards within the valley! The city is quite unique with beautiful four churches with strong significance. The city is house to a lot of local craft and small business! A great spot for going for wine tasting experience or similar for truffle hunt and more. The bus connets the train station and the city, city is walkable radius!

It's a beautiful and peaceful city. It's a lot of up/down walking. I did see people in a wheelchair at the Basilica but don't feel like this is the place for people with walking disabilities. The weather was in high 90's so that made the uphill a bit of a challenge. This is not a late night party town. Do you research for restaurants and book reservations for dinner. There is bus service to the city center and that may be easier than parking on the outside and walking in. I can only imagine how beautiful the city is at Christmas time. It's magical all lit up at night.

We were there for 2 weeks for Italian school so it was long.

We were there for 2 weeks for Italian school so it was long. The town was nice but everything centers on St Francis and churches (which is completely understandable and exactly WHY people go there) However, all the shops are centered around religious statues and jewelry, most of the places to visit have religious connotations. That said, the town is beautiful and there were plenty of great restaurants to eat and drink. We left the "city" for the weekend and went to a spa nearby (Valle de Assisi Spa) which was a nice change.

I love this city.

I love this city. The people are wonderful and even in the higher temperature the city is pleasant. The city has a spiritual message of 3 holy people, St. Francis, St. Clare and St. Carlo Acutis, who now attract many young people. I recommend visiting this city with an open mind and perceive all the sensations and stimuli.

We were prepared for a hilly, walkable city. Coffee shops and restaurants abound in Assisi. We were there for only 1 day and were able to visit the tomb of St. Carlo Acutis, The Memory Museum (worth a visit), the Basilca of St. Francis and the Peace Bell. Each of these sites had their own beauty and humbleness. The townspeople were lovely and even with not having a common language at times we were able to communicate our needs. The taxi from the train station was 20 Euros. Some drivers only take cash so be sure to ask before climbing in.

I have been to Assisi many times over the last forty years,...

I have been to Assisi many times over the last forty years, and it never fails to move and to calm me (except in August - don't go in August). The town and its residence exude the peace of St Francis. It is a fascinating if challenging town to walk around (though even in a wheelchair many of its major streets are accessible). Go to absorb the atmosphere and to soak it in, rather than to see/do things -- though it's not short of things to see/do either.

Domus Pacis Assisi is very well located near the train station and it is very convenient for travelling by trains. It is upgraded and very, very clean. For those who cannot eat suggary breakfast, there is a possibility with toasts and cheese which is more than expected in majority of places in Italy. Air condition is perfect, not too cold, not too warm and without a windy air. Perfect for 38 degree in the summer 2024!!! I recommend it for All.

The view from the bar terrace is spectacular. The hotel is a classic style one with leather sofa and antique solid wood furniture. Well kept and it is a few meters away from the station as well as the main square. Assisi is all hills so be prepared to walk a lot. April was nice already quite warm.

This is my second time in this hotel and it's the best one in Assisi.The location is excellent as 5 minutes walking to San Francesco's Basilica, it has a marvelous view over the Valley. The staff are very friendly and the hotel is very clean. The Breakfast buffet is very rich with lots of choices.
