We met Mathilda at another of her properties in in Stellenbosch, in 2018 - and always wanted to stay at Die Opstal, after that. She's a remarkable woman, and we never forgot the effect she had on us then! Die Opstal is a BEAUTIFUL property, run by beautiful people!. We were the only guests on the night we stayed - but they still went out of their way to prepare the most incredible dinner and breakfast for us. It was well worth the big detour on our roadtrip, to finally get to experience Die Opstal... We HIGHLY recommend staying here....

Beautiful country lodge set at the foot of the Swartberg mountains. The vistas were breathtaking made even more special by variety of animals (buck, zebras, giraffes) that roam the property. The lodge was Calm, Understated and welcoming. The staff were friendly and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

Lots of space, beds and even a secluded outside spot. Hostess was wonderful, communication to get keys so easy to comprehend. A thoughtful jar of cookies, drinking water, treats on our beds and a fresh jug of milk in the fridge. We felt welcomed and were very comfortable.

Oudtshoorn is a lovely karoo town with everything you need.

Oudtshoorn is a lovely karoo town with everything you need. It offers a variety of activities (nature based, wine tasting, agricultural and shopping etc.) and a couple of days spent in Oudtshoorn will allow you to also visit the surrounding smaller towns (de Rust, Calitzdorp). If you like slow living, good food & wine, this is a must visit.

Oudtshoorn was overall clean and tidy as a city.

Oudtshoorn was overall clean and tidy as a city. It did not feel run down at all. People were friendly. Lots of shops available for groceries etc. Karoo Luserne butchery is an incredible butchery and the Ostrich Emporium is superb for those looking for Ostrich meat products. Lovely place to do day outings from. We went to Prince Albert for a day and travelled some of the incredible mountain passes there and back. Closer to home are Cango caves and the Ostrich and wildlife farms - they are always amazing. The Karoo landscape is breathtakingly beautiful.

We were travelling through to get to our destination elsewhere and didn’t plan to stay. It has interesting tourist attractions for those wishing to extend their stay. An atmospheric restaurant Nostalgia had outside seating with fairy lights which was a great way to spend a warm evening.

Nice place to go to see the ostrich's, but honestly the Ostrich farm tours are not that great anymore. Cango Caves were good and interesting, we did not do the extreme tour but it sounded very interesting if you are looking for an adventure. There are plenty of restaurants in the town, we went to 'Nostalgie) and this was some of the best food I have ever tasted, very traditional south African home cooked food, I'm not a fan of pumpkin, but he pumpkin served as a side on the mains was delicious

I love Oudtshoorn.

I love Oudtshoorn. There are some wonderful restaurants there, especially Nostalgie. We drove around the city and loved the beauty in all the old Buildings. They certainly don’t build houses and buildings like that anymore.

We had an amazing stay in Oudtshoorn. The property was tranquil, beautifully maintained, and exceptionally neat, clean, and hygienic. The breakfast was excellent, with a great selection and delicious food. What truly stood out was the staff. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable throughout our stay. Their warm hospitality made the experience even more enjoyable.

The self catering units were lovely, overlooking the swimming pool area where a lot of people were relaxing on pool loungers under the shady trees. The bed was comfortable and the shower was amazing. Loved sitting on the porch enjoying the view of nature and birds chirping. The buffet breakfast was a great start to our day! Wish we could've stayed longer!
