The cottage was so quiet and comfortable. I felt completely safe there and it was lovely to meet Bridget and Ollie Dog. I couldn't have felt more welcomed. Everything was so clean and I had all the utensils I needed. A lovely big bathroom as well. After a day of VERY WET & MUDDY mountain bike riding in the Forest of Dean, it was wonderful to come back and be able to clean up and relax in such a cosy space. Plenty of room for my car on the drive and directly outside the front door - perfect given the rain we had that weekend! Bridget even said I could bring my e-bike in to charge it up. Nothing felt like a big deal so I was completely relaxed. The directions given before I arrived helped immensely.

Breakfast was self-catering which was ideal for me since I don't like fitting with hotel timetables and don't always want a huge cooked meal. Bread, butter, milk and coffee were provided in the annex, along with excellent jams. Refills were no problem for the hosts. The room was very quiet.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Hilston Park while visiting the area for a two-day forging class to make my own kitchen knife. I discovered this charming place online and booked through Booking.com, and I’m so glad I did! Upon arrival, we drove down a private lane that led us to the grand building set against the backdrop of stunning views of blackcurrant fields and rolling hills. The picturesque scenery instantly set a relaxing tone for our trip. We arrived an hour early, but our gracious host welcomed us warmly and attended to our every need, making us feel right at home. It was delightful to be accompanied by Hugo, the gentle giant of a dog who brought an added warmth to the atmosphere. Our rooms were impeccably clean and cozy, and after dropping off our bags, my dad and I headed to the archery range for a little friendly competition. Later, we enjoyed sitting by the open log fire in the Manor House, creating the perfect setting for a game of chess and some quality father-son bonding. The following morning, we indulged in a vegetarian Indian breakfast featuring Gobhi Paratha and traditional tea. This unique dish was a delightful first for me—generous portions that fueled us for a day at the forge. After a long day of forging, we returned to the Manor for dinner. The vegetarian Indian curry was bursting with flavor, and the homemade apple crumble made with fresh apples from the on-site orchard was the perfect finish to our meal. Spending another evening by the fireplace playing chess while reflecting on the day was exactly what we needed. I had read various reviews about Hilston Park before my visit, noting comments about the uniqueness of the place and the importance of approaching it with an open mind. Having experienced it myself, I find this feedback accurate. While there were some signs of wear in areas, it’s clear that efforts are being made to enhance the property, and it’s on an encouraging path.

After the recent flooding the town has pulled together to get 'back to normal'. A few businesses were still shut when we visited, but the town has so much to offer every 'reopening' is a bonus. Wonderful coffee shops and restaurants and lots of private unique shops - well worth a visit any time of the year. On top of that the historic buildings, the Wye valley and the Forest of Dean are all local - what's not to like?

it's a real town, not just a beautiful tourist magnet. we stayed downtown in old lodge above pub-loved how quirky it was. we rested and regrouped in monmouth. took walk in the fields across the river and around town. i enjoyed the bookstores and thrift stores. i was really impressed with the green walls of the public restrooms by the historic bridge which had gorgeous flowers which inspired me to paint.

Great little down.

Great little down. High street has good selection of shops and eateries. Reasonable prices for food and drink. People very friendly. Pubs were pleasantly lively but not rammed on Saturday night. Surrounding countryside very pretty. Definitely worth a one day visit.

There is so much to see and do in and around Monmouth, I didn't have enough time to really explore but there's a record shop, fabric shop and loads of places to walk as well. We popped into the whole food store and was delighted with the range of items and the friendly staff.

We were trekking from Symmonds yat to Monmouth, spending a night in monmouth and then trekking on to st Brievals 12th century hostel the next day. Monmouth is Perfect intermediate spot along the wye valley walk by the river river Ross. Went to Monmouth castle, the regimental museum and walked around the town, including the fortified bridge. Had coffee on high street, a cornish pasty from the pasty shop and went to roof top terrace Italian restaurant for dinner which was popular and nice. Went to the local historic cinema to see a film to end off the evening.
