"Went at the beginning of rainy season and were told by everyone we were so lucky because we didn't get much rain, not that I would have minded. I recommend checking out SODA restaurants as they have good local food and good prices. Costa Rica has so many good little towns and tourist attractions but wouldn't necessarily recommend staying in San Jose."

"Fortuna is this amazing town at the base of an inactive volcano beautiful mountains the place is lovely and not too commercialized highly recommend. There are several sodas around downtown every one I ate and had great food and was super reasonable. But because I stayed in an Airbnb I was able to cook my own food which was perfect."

"It felt safe walking about 7 min. to mall for dinner. Choices of licensed restaurants and food court. We had a pina colada and snacks at the first restaurant past the food court. Residential area close to airport. Shuttle driver was great. Kept us informed on how long it would take since traffic was heavy. I have already recommended the hotel to a traveller we met during our trip and I recommend it to all looking for a comfortable stay close to the airport."

"If you are looking to see monkeys and sloths, this is the place for you! Manuel Antonio National Park is full of wildlife and nature. There are also beaches for every type of tourist within the park. It is an easy bus ride from Quepos (300-400 colones), about 15 minutes away. If you want a good and cheap meal, I recommend street empanadas! Look for someone with a cooler or ask around."

One of 1,856 reviews:
"If you are a nature lover, looking to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life often associated with cities and fast paced living….. this is the place for you. If you are looking for a party town, then try somewhere else. This area has plenty of fun bars and experiences, but it really is meant for folks who can fall into the magic that the jungle beaches offer. The rainforest is… life changing. And I highly recommend staying open hearted to what awaits you. Waking up every morning to the 5 am howler monkeys was a bit spooky at first, and then I learned to embrace it. Out there, life starts early, and I started to feel naturally energized? I even found myself eating lighter, not needing as much to get me through each day as the visceral feeling of the rainforest and nature within it was stimulating enough. It’s hard to explain, but magical is the only word that comes to mind. We flew into San Jose, rented a car, and drove out to Puerto Viejo. We stayed in a beautiful and simple house, that had only screens and glass for walls. It was immersive and healing for the nervous system. We then rented a moped, super affordable, and rode around to explore the beaches and wildlife refuges. There are two wonderful refuges to support, The jaguar rescue, and the green macaw rescue. Highly recommend them both. The guides are knowledgeable, and the profit from your ticket goes directly to supporting the rehabilitation, protection, and care of all the animals there. The food can be quite expensive, but if you stick to the more local “sodas” or cafeterias, the food is still fresh and a bit easier on the wallet. Otherwise, expect to pay $40-$80 for dinner. Yes, really. But don’t let that dissuade you. There is something different about this place. And I will be thinking about this trip for a long, long time. Pura vida!"

Monteverde Costa Rica

One of 1,987 reviews:
"The cloud forest is unique. Stayed at Camino Verde B&B in St Elena. Highly recommend but very windy this time of year. A must is to go with a guide as difficult if not impossible to view critters with naked eye. Ate at Letty's, local simple soda. Also, went on guided night jungle tour thru Camino Verde Tours excellent. Both tours included transportation. We did the hanging bridges at Selvatura-nice to see canopy but do not expect to see animals or birds. I would skip next time. 2 night minimum stay is required to see all. Note both the night tour requires lots of up and down hiking but moderate. Hanging bridges easy. Cloud forest tour easy to moderate. You can stay longer (than the tour) in Monteverde Cloud forest and hike to a scenic lookout but it was socked in with mist the day we went. All in all, I would recommend this area as 1 of many others on your trip to Costa Rica."

"It is very easy to get around with a golf cart in Tamarindo. I recommend staying in town on the beach. This was our second trip to Tamarindo. The first time we got a car and the second time we got a golf cart. The golf cart was the way to go. All the restaurants were amazing. We did not have one bad meal. The servers and people are so nice and are always happy and upbeat, Fly into Libria if you are going to Tamerindo and have your hotel arrange the pickup for you from the Airport. Do the adventure package with zip lines and all the activities possible. We did and had an amazing trip with our 13, 14, and 16 year old girls. The entire family is already talking about making another trip."

I’m not surprised by the high reviews — the photos show exactly how it is. The place has a calm vibe, great breakfast and coffee, and a garden full of life. The night tour was amazing, with red-eyed and glass frogs. We didn’t see a sloth in the garden but did at Mistico Park and at the hosts’ farm, where we ate fresh rambutans! We didn’t feel like a tourist here but part of the family. Truly memorable stay. Thank you Leo and Rosaura!
